Soul Weary

We are often so busy in our world of comings and goings that rarely we take time to just relax and rest.We have become  a nation of soul weary people. We are tired. We see  all the pain, crime and hatred on television and on our computers and various media sights and our souls cry out. We eat, sleep and dream in the light of our technology based world. Our jobs depend on it, we can’t live with out it, and we don’t give ourselves enough time away from it to rest, relax and regroup. Our souls are running on empty. We are constantly immersed in the go, go, go of this busy world that we barely have time to sit and relax and just enjoy the serenity and peace that our souls crave.

The bible defines the soul as a living being.

The soul is a living being. It resides within us. It is part of us. It is the person we are. It makes us who we are. It is alive. And a soul can become weary and tired also. And possibly even die if not taken care of.

Yes a soul can die. If a soul has no reason to live it will die. If a soul is tired of life it will die. If a soul is weary and worn down it will lead to dying. A soul needs to rest.

I was talking to my daughter the other day. She works in the corporate world in California and spends alot of time in traffic driving back and forth to work. Often she spends 2 to 3 hours just inching along to get home, after an eight hour busy day at work.  She hates the traffic. She told me what she misses the most is dirt and grass and the quiet solitude. And to move to a place like Montana would be soul resting.

I got to thinking about soul resting. I think the world has forgotten how to let their souls rest. We are so busy with work, family, home and play that we forget that a body and soul needs that rest. I can see why my daughter needs some soul resting. I myself probably wouldn’t have lasted as long as she. She is a very strong person but even strong souls become weak and weary if they have no rest. And therein lies the problem. And that is when people with weary souls begin having problems.

My soul has been weary. There have been times that I have put off rest and relaxation because I thought something just needed to get done and that the world could not go on without me.  I got my children ready for school, my husband ready for work and then myself ready for work.  I cleaned the house , ran the erands, etc.etc. etc. but I forgot to take time for me. The day I sat down and cried was the day I realized I had become soul weary. I am  a Christian. I love my Lord with all my heart. but there are times I forget that he is there. I fail to pray. I fail to put my trust in him. I fail to let my soul rest in his love. I suppose I am only human  and I am not perfect but I can make excuses all day about why.  What  I needed to do was take a breath, pray, take a step back, look at my life and then let the Lord help me take care of it.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 ESV
We have become a nation of busyness, to the point of even working on the Seventh Day which the Lord has meant for rest and relaxation.
“Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.Exodus 34:21

I am guilty of working on the seventh day. I mow my lawn in the summer. I rake leaves in the fall. I clean the house in the winter. For seven days I work and sometimes I neglect the Lord and his love because I am too busy to sit down and relax and just spend some time in his presence. Work, work, work.  Spending time in his presence doesn’t necessarily mean going to church. Sometimes our works at church are not to impress  the Lord.  And even if we attend church we can become soul weary if we don’t listen to God. I am not saying don’t go to church. Go to church if that is your way of spending time with the Lord. but make sure you spend it with the Lord and fellowship with others who want to spend time with God also. Don’t go just for show. There are other ways of spending time with God.

If sitting out side under the shade tree, listening to the birds sing, and watching the grass grow is spending time with the Lord, than do it. If walking in the mountains listening to the wind blow through the trees and smelling the pine in the air is spending time with the Lord, than do it. If crunching through the snow drifts, watching your breath float into the air in cold wispy clouds is spending time with the Lord than do it. If drinking a cup of coffee and listening to the silence is spending time with the Lord, than do it. The Lord is there… you just need to slow down, relax and listen.

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Mark 1:35 NIV
Jesus spent time with God , in solitary places, in the mountains, in desolate places, by himself, praying and talking to the Lord. And his soul was refreshed.
That is what our souls need. To be refreshed, replenished and satisfied. Our souls need to spend time in his love.
“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Psalm 62:1 NIV
For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.”Jeremiah 31.25ESV
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”Psalm 46:10 NIV

As I sit here writing this I find my soul becoming refreshed already. My times of spending time with the Lord are when I read his word and write my word, whether it is on a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday ,Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. I rest my weary soul, spend time with my Lord and and I am refreshed in his love.

Whether you are soul weary or just need a soul resting; take some time to do it. You will find that when you do, all will be well with your soul.

IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL written by HG Spafford

When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul
It is well
With my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul
It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul
It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
